Trick or Treat

You decide. Was cleaning out my hard drive and came across a little assignment I wrote for a writing contest several years ago. Got an honorable mention, but they never did publish it, even as filler. If you read it, you'll probably discover why.

It was for a ghost story contest. As some of you may know, I enjoy Stephen King and horror in general. But I can't write a serious scary story to save my life. Can. Not. Do. It, because goofiness always creeps in.

So, for some Friday funsies, I'll share the link to this story with you (I'd put it online to share with family members.)

Plus, it's better than ruminating upon China's forthcoming laser shooting war satellites of DOOOM!

Which, if true, is a lot scarier than anything anyone could make up.

What a delicious twist on the idea of a guardian angel, LOL!

You know, they say horror is ultimately the most conservative genre of movies. Indeed, it is where conservatism shines.

1. Men who are jerks, beat or cheat on women, and are general arses...die.
2. Virgins always live, and if they are men, will often be the hero of the story, and end up with the girl.
3. Sluts die, usually in some horrible way.
4. Those who backstab their friends or are selfish die.
5. Anybody stealing dies.
6. People who 'don't leave our friend X behind' live.

Only religious people are a mixed bag (nowadays). Usually, they sacrifice themselves, but more modern horrors could make them the villain.

Just an FYI

the space race is a scary thing, as well as lazers are a scary thing, something needs to be done to unify space policy or we are all in trouble...

I thought it was a pretty good story. Not sure why they wouldn't publish it, unless they didn't publish any but the award winners.

Tony -

They automatically publish the winners and save out the honorable mentions as fillers in later issues.

I'm thinking it's because the story didn't fit with the overall theme they were going for: horror-type ghost stories, not slightly off-kilter NASCAR themed hauntings.

But hey! I'll bet it was different from their other submissions...
